“Howz dis guy? He one English Majah, but he say he one ‘data scientist’? How can?”
–everyone who I’ve met that asks about my background
I started college around the time of the IT bubble bust as a computer science major at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The only employer in town worth its salt was a game development company. I don’t like playing video games. I was introduced to the idea of computers and literature by an English professor who had studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology a few years into college. I went on to earn graduate degrees in Education and Public Health (biostatistics & epidemiology specialization) where my interests in language and statistics were piqued. Today, I conduct analytics & data mining for a utilities company. In the near future, I’d like to be in a role that focuses on natural language processing/understanding.
